The area
The Chamonix valley runs from Les Houches to Le Tour beneath Mont Blanc, and its ski areas are separate mountains rather than one linked domain: Les Houches, the Brévent and Flégère on the sunny side, the Grands Montets above Argentière, Le Tour at the head of the valley, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 m for the Vallée Blanche glacier descent. Buses and trains link them, and the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass adds Courmayeur through the tunnel.
The snow
In our record Chamonix averages about 14 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and 13 in December and March, the highest figures in the northern French Alps. The valley floor at about 1,000 m can be green in a mild winter while the upper mountain is deep.
