France has the biggest linked ski areas in the world, and nearly all of them are in the northern French Alps: the Tarentaise valley in Savoie, with Val d’Isère, Tignes, the Trois Vallées and Paradiski, and the Mont Blanc side of Haute-Savoie around Chamonix, Megève and the Portes du Soleil. Further south the Dauphiné Alps hold Alpe d’Huez, Les Deux Alpes and Serre Chevalier, and the Pyrenees run along the Spanish border in the south-west.
What sets the French Alps apart is height. Several resorts here have lifts above 3,000 m and glacier skiing, and Val Thorens, at 2,300 m, is the highest resort village in the Alps. That altitude is why the season here runs long: in our record the resorts average about 13 snowy days at mid-mountain in both December and January, and still around 10 in April.
When it snows
The season for most resorts opens in early to mid-December and closes in April, with the high, glacier-backed resorts such as Tignes and Val d’Isère starting in late November and running into May. Snowfall is regular from November to April, with the heaviest weeks usually in January and February. Spring brings warmer, heavier snow low down and long sunny days up high.
Getting there
Geneva airport is the main gateway to the northern French Alps, with Lyon and Grenoble serving the Dauphiné and the Tarentaise. High-speed trains from Paris and London reach Moûtiers and Bourg-Saint-Maurice for the Tarentaise resorts and Saint-Gervais for the Mont Blanc valley.
