Switzerland’s ski resorts sit among the highest peaks in the Alps. Zermatt and Saas-Fee in the Valais have lifts above 3,500 m and ski all year on their glaciers; Verbier, Crans-Montana and the Bernese Oberland resorts of Grindelwald and the Jungfrau region are on the same latitude further west and north; Engelberg and Andermatt sit in the centre of the country; and Graubünden in the east holds St. Moritz, Davos, Klosters, Arosa, Lenzerheide and Laax.
In our record the Swiss resorts average 12 to 13 snowy days at mid-mountain in December, January and March, and, thanks to the glacier resorts, they keep a few snowy days even in summer.
When it snows
Most resorts open between mid-November and mid-December and close in April. Zermatt and Saas-Fee run into the summer on their glaciers. Snowfall is regular from November to April, with January and March the most consistently snowy months in our record.
Getting there
Zurich and Geneva are the main airports, and Swiss trains reach almost every resort directly: Zermatt and Saas-Fee via Visp, the Bernese Oberland via Interlaken, Engelberg from Lucerne, and Graubünden from Chur. Basel is a third option for the north and east.
