Snow in the Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachians run from Alabama to Newfoundland, and the ski resorts of the eastern United States sit in their northern ranges: Killington and Stowe in the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the resorts of New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Maine. They are low, with lifts topping out around 1,300 m, and their winters are cold and short.

In our record Killington and Stowe average about 10 snowy days at mid-mountain in December, January and February. Snow comes from nor’easters running up the coast and from Arctic cold; thaws and rain between storms are common, so snowmaking is extensive and grooming matters.

When it snows

Seasons run from late November to April, with Killington usually among the first in the east to open and the last to close.
