Snow in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees form the border between France and Spain for about 430 km, with Andorra tucked into the eastern half. They are lower than the Alps, topping out at 3,404 m at Aneto, but the ski resorts sit high: Grandvalira in Andorra runs from 1,710 m to 2,640 m and Baqueira-Beret in Spain’s Val d’Aran from 1,500 m to 2,610 m. The French side has a long string of smaller resorts from Cauterets to Font-Romeu.

In our record Grandvalira and Baqueira-Beret average about 13 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 10 to 11 in December, January and February, on a par with the French Alps. Snow comes mainly from Atlantic fronts hitting the western and central Pyrenees, and the eastern end and the Spanish side are drier and sunnier.

When it snows

Seasons run from late November or early December to early April, with Baqueira-Beret sometimes into May. March is often the snowiest month in the record here, later than in the Alps.
