Snow in the Sierra Nevada

The Sierra Nevada runs for about 640 km along the eastern edge of California. Its ski resorts are around Lake Tahoe, with Palisades Tahoe and Heavenly the largest, and at Mammoth Mountain further south, whose lifts reach 3,369 m. Pacific storms hit the range’s western slope and drop some of the largest snowfalls of any ski region in the world, wet and heavy, which is why it is called “Sierra cement”.

In our record the Sierra resorts average about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 9 to 10 in December, January and February. The pattern is a few enormous storms rather than steady falls, so seasons vary enormously from year to year.

When it snows

Seasons run from mid-November to April at Tahoe, and Mammoth often skis into late May or June.
