Norway’s alpine resorts are modest in size by Alpine standards but reliable for snow, because winter here is long and cold. Hemsedal, north-west of Oslo, is the largest, with lifts from 620 m to 1,450 m; Trysil, near the Swedish border, is the biggest by number of runs. The country’s real winter culture is cross-country skiing, and every town has lit trails.
In our record Hemsedal and Trysil average about 11 snowy days at mid-mountain in December and January. Their low elevation is offset by the latitude: December days are short, and the snow, once down, stays.
When it snows
Seasons run from late November or December to late April or early May. Snow usually comes with westerly storms off the North Atlantic, so the western mountains get more than the inland east.
Getting there
Oslo airport is the gateway for both Hemsedal and Trysil, each two to three hours by road. Bergen serves the western fjord resorts.
