Snow in Andorra
Andorra is a small country in the eastern Pyrenees, between France and Spain, and almost all of it is mountain. Grandvalira, its biggest ski area, links the resorts of the Canillo, Encamp and Soldeu side of the country with lifts between 1,710 m and 2,640 m. The rest of the country’s skiing is in the Vallnord area to the west.
In our record Grandvalira averages about 13 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 10 to 11 in December, January and February. The Pyrenees are lower than the Alps, and Andorra’s villages sit high, which helps the snow keep.
When it snows
The season runs from early December to early April. Snowfall comes from Atlantic storms crossing Spain and, less often, from the Mediterranean side.
Getting there
There is no airport in Andorra. Barcelona and Toulouse are the usual gateways, each about three hours by road; Girona and Lleida are closer for some routes. Roads over the passes can close in heavy snow.
