Snow in Argentina

Argentina’s skiing is in the Andes along the Chilean border. Las Leñas, in Mendoza province, is the country’s most serious resort, with lifts from 2,240 m to 3,430 m and steep, open terrain above the treeline. Cerro Catedral, above the lakeside city of Bariloche in Patagonia, is often described as the largest resort in South America and is the most accessible, with a lower, more forested mountain.

In our record the two average about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain from June to August, more than the Chilean resorts, though Cerro Catedral’s low base at 1,030 m means its lower slopes are often rain.

When it snows

Las Leñas runs from late June to late September; Cerro Catedral from July to late September, sometimes into October. Storms cross from the Pacific over Chile and arrive drier on the Argentine side.

Getting there

Bariloche has its own airport with flights from Buenos Aires; Cerro Catedral is 20 minutes away. Las Leñas is reached from Mendoza or San Rafael, a long drive in either case.
