Australia’s ski resorts are in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and the Victorian Alps, the high ground of the Great Dividing Range. Perisher, often described as the largest resort in the southern hemisphere, and Thredbo share Kosciuszko National Park; Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham are the main Victorian resorts. The mountains are rounded and modest, with lifts topping out around 2,000 m, and the snow is marginal by world standards.
In our record the Australian resorts average about 8 snowy days at mid-mountain in July and August and 5 to 6 in June and September. Snowmaking underpins every resort, and warm winters can shorten the season sharply.
When it snows
The season officially opens on the June long weekend and runs to early October. The most reliable snow is from mid-July to the end of August.
Getting there
Canberra is about two and a half hours from Thredbo and Perisher; Sydney is five to six. Melbourne is about three hours from Mt Buller.
