Snow in Bulgaria
Bulgaria’s ski resorts are in the mountains of the south-west. Bansko, the largest, sits at the foot of the Pirin range with its lifts rising from the town at about 925 m to 2,600 m. Borovets in the Rila mountains and Pamporovo in the Rhodopes are the other two established resorts.
In our record Bansko averages about 10 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and March and 8 in December. The Pirin is high and cold for its latitude, but the lower slopes rely on snowmaking to keep the runs to town open.
When it snows
The season runs from early December to mid-April. The snowiest weeks are usually January to early March.
Getting there
Sofia airport is about two hours from Bansko by road. Plovdiv is an alternative for Pamporovo.
