Snow in Finland

Finland is flat, and its skiing is in Lapland, where the fells rise a few hundred metres above the forests. Levi, near Kittilä, is the largest resort, with lifts from 206 m to 531 m. Ylläs, Ruka and Saariselkä are the other main ones. What Lapland lacks in height it makes up for in season length and cold: snow lies from October to May.

In our record Levi averages about 11 snowy days at mid-mountain in December and 7 to 8 in the other winter months. Days are very short around midwinter, with the sun barely rising in December, and long by March and April.

When it snows

Levi’s season runs from early October to early May, one of the longest in Europe. Snow is regular from October to April.

Getting there

Kittilä airport is 15 minutes from Levi, with direct flights from Helsinki and, in winter, charters from Britain and elsewhere in Europe. Rovaniemi is the gateway to the southern fells.
