Snow in Germany
Germany’s share of the Alps is a narrow strip along the Austrian border, and its biggest ski resort is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, below the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The resort’s lifts run from the town at around 740 m to the Zugspitze glacier at 2,650 m, which is why it can open in late November and ski into May while the town itself is often green.
In our record Garmisch averages about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain in December, January and March. Bavaria’s other snow lies in the Allgäu and Berchtesgaden Alps to either side, and the low mountain ranges further north, such as the Harz and the Black Forest, get snow in cold winters.
Getting there
Munich airport is about two hours from Garmisch by road or rail, and Innsbruck is just across the border.
