South Korea’s ski resorts are in the Taebaek Mountains of Gangwon, in the north-east. Yongpyong, which hosted the slalom and giant slalom of the 2018 Winter Olympics, is the largest, with lifts from 770 m to 1,458 m. High1, Phoenix Park and Alpensia are nearby. The resorts are small by Alpine standards and rely on snowmaking, but they are close to Seoul and open long hours, with night skiing standard.
In our record Yongpyong averages about 4 to 5 snowy days at mid-mountain from January to March. Winters are cold and dry, with snow arriving in short bursts from the Sea of Japan side.
When it snows
The season runs from November to early April. Snow is most likely from December to February.
Getting there
Seoul’s Incheon airport is about three hours from Yongpyong by road, and the KTX high-speed line reaches Jinbu, near the resorts, in about two hours from Seoul.
