The Hida Mountains, usually called the Northern Japanese Alps, run north to south through Nagano, Toyama and Gifu prefectures on Honshu and rise above 3,000 m. Hakuba Valley, on their eastern side, is the main ski area, with ten resorts sharing one pass.
In our record Hakuba averages about 23 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and 21 in December, among the highest figures anywhere in this record. The snow comes from cold Siberian air crossing the Sea of Japan and hitting these mountains first. The valley floor is low, so the lower slopes can be wet, but the upper mountain is reliably deep.
