Snow in the Sierra Nevada
Spain’s Sierra Nevada rises above Granada in Andalusia to 3,479 m at Mulhacén, the highest point in mainland Spain, within sight of the Mediterranean. The ski resort, Europe’s most southerly major one, has lifts from 2,100 m to 3,300 m and skis on north-facing slopes that hold snow well despite the latitude.
In our record it averages about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 6 to 7 in December, January and February. Long sunny spells between storms are the norm, and the resort relies on its altitude and snowmaking.
When it snows
The season runs from late November or early December to late April or early May.
