About Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain is in the Sierra Nevada of California, next to the town of Mammoth Lakes. It has more than 3,500 skiable acres, rising from 7,953 ft (2,424 m) to a summit at 11,053 ft (3,369 m).

The resort gives its season as early November through June, sometimes later, and reports average snowfall of more than 400 inches at the base. Mammoth Yosemite Airport is nearby; Reno is about 168 miles (270 km) away by road.

The snow

Mammoth is a volcano in the eastern Sierra Nevada, with lifts from 2,424 m to 3,369 m, and it gets its snow from Pacific storms that arrive in enormous, wet doses rather than steadily. Our record shows about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 8 to 9 in December, January and February, but the winters swing wildly: 2022/23 was almost double the ten-year average, 2020/21 about half. Snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years, and the season often runs to late May or beyond.

Who it suits

Everyone, with long groomers, big open bowls off the top and terrain parks that are among the best anywhere. It is a long way from anywhere, which keeps the crowds down midweek, and the town of Mammoth Lakes is a practical base rather than a pretty one. Mammoth is on the Ikon Pass.

Getting there

Mammoth Yosemite airport has limited winter flights. Reno is about three hours by road, Los Angeles about five, and Highway 395 can close in storms.
