Snow in Georgia

Georgia’s ski resorts are in the Greater Caucasus, which rises to over 5,000 m along the country’s northern border. Gudauri, on the Georgian Military Highway two hours north of Tbilisi, is the largest, with lifts from about 1,990 m to 3,279 m and wide, treeless slopes that are well known for off-piste and heli-skiing. Bakuriani, in the Lesser Caucasus, and Mestia, in Svaneti, are the other established resorts.

In our record Gudauri averages about 14 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 9 to 11 from January to April. The Caucasus is high enough that the season runs late, and spring is often the most reliable time.

When it snows

Gudauri’s season runs from December to April. Snowfall builds through the winter, with the heaviest falls often in late winter and early spring.

Getting there

Tbilisi airport is about two to three hours from Gudauri by road. Kutaisi is an alternative with budget flights.
