Snow in the Scandinavian Mountains
The Scandinavian Mountains, or Scandes, run the length of the Norway-Sweden border. They are old, rounded and not very high, with the ski resorts’ lifts topping out between 1,100 m and 1,500 m, but they lie far enough north that snow is long-lasting and reliable. Hemsedal and Trysil in Norway and Åre in Sweden are the largest resorts.
In our record the resorts here average about 13 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and 11 to 12 in December and March. Westerly storms off the Atlantic give the Norwegian side more snow; the Swedish side is drier and colder.
When it snows
Seasons run from late November or December to late April or early May. Midwinter days are short this far north, and the best combination of snow and light is from late February onwards.
