Snow in Spain
Spain has two very different snowy mountain ranges. The Pyrenees along the French border hold Baqueira-Beret in the Val d’Aran, the country’s largest resort, and the Sierra Nevada in Andalusia, in the far south, has Europe’s most southerly major resort, with lifts up to 3,300 m within sight of the Mediterranean.
In our record Baqueira-Beret averages about 12 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 9 to 10 in December, January and February. The Sierra Nevada is drier, with around 7 snowy days in January and 12 in March, but its height keeps the snow that falls.
When it snows
Baqueira-Beret’s season runs from late November to early May; the Sierra Nevada opens around the start of December and closes in late April or early May. Snowfall in the Pyrenees comes with Atlantic fronts; the Sierra Nevada gets its snow from both Atlantic and Mediterranean storms and can have long dry, sunny spells between them.
Getting there
Toulouse and Barcelona serve the Val d’Aran; Granada and Málaga serve the Sierra Nevada, which is under an hour from Granada by road.
