Snow in the Dolomites
The Dolomites are the pale limestone mountains of north-eastern Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose vertical walls and towers rise straight out of gentle, sunny slopes. Val Gardena, Alta Badia and Cortina d’Ampezzo are the best-known resorts, all on the Dolomiti Superski pass, which links a dozen valleys and hundreds of lifts.
The Dolomites are drier than the main chain of the Alps. In our record their resorts average about 7 to 8 snowy days at mid-mountain from December to March, compared with 12 for the Alps as a whole. Their reputation rests on sun, scenery and grooming, and on snowmaking, which covers most of the pistes. When snow does come it is often from a southerly storm pushing moist air up from the Adriatic, and those can be very large.
