About Cortina d’Ampezzo

Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and co-hosted the 2026 Winter Olympics with Milan. The town is part of the Dolomiti Superski lift pass.

Its skiing is split across separate areas, including Tofane, Faloria-Cristallo and Lagazuoi-5 Torri, with about 120 km of slopes in total.

The snow

Cortina sits at 1,224 m in a wide, sunny basin of the Dolomites, and its skiing is split across separate areas, Tofane, Faloria-Cristallo and Lagazuoi-Cinque Torri, reaching 2,828 m. The Dolomites are the driest part of the Alps in this record: Cortina averages about 7 to 8 snowy days a month at mid-mountain through the winter, half the figure for the western Alps, and depends on snowmaking to cover its pistes. When a southerly storm does come, the amounts can be large. Snow was on the ground on nine of the last ten Christmas Days.

Who it suits

People who want the scenery, the town and the food more than powder. Cortina’s pistes are groomed, its lift queues are short, and the Lagazuoi run past the Cinque Torri is one of the most beautiful in the Alps. The Dolomiti Superski pass covers the whole region, and the Sella Ronda is a day’s drive away.

Getting there

Venice airport is about two hours by road, Treviso a little less, Innsbruck about two and a half. There is no railway; buses run from Calalzo, Venice and Treviso.
