Snow in the Himalayas
The Himalaya is the highest mountain range on Earth, and lift-served skiing in it is rare. Gulmarg, in the Pir Panjal range of Jammu and Kashmir, is the main resort, with a gondola to 3,980 m on Mount Apharwat, and Auli in Uttarakhand is the other established one. The rest is ski touring and heli-skiing.
In our record Gulmarg averages about 11 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and March. The snow comes from western disturbances, storms that travel east from the Mediterranean and Iran and can drop very large amounts in a few days. Gulmarg’s snow is known for being dry and deep.
When it snows
Gulmarg’s season runs from late December to late March, and the upper gondola opens when avalanche conditions allow.
