About Aspen Snowmass

Aspen Snowmass is not one connected ski area but four separate mountains in Pitkin County, Colorado: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. All four are run by the Aspen Skiing Company, and one lift ticket covers more than 5,700 acres across them.

Aspen Mountain rises above the town of Aspen. Snowmass, near Snowmass Village, is the largest of the four and reaches 12,510 ft (3,813 m). Buttermilk is the lowest, with a base at 7,870 ft (2,399 m), and is known for its terrain parks. The elevations on this page span all four mountains.

The snow

Aspen’s four mountains, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, sit between 2,399 m and 3,813 m in the Elk Mountains. In our record it snows on about 12 days a month at mid-mountain from December to March, and snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years. The best recent winter in the record was 2022/23. Aspen’s snow is classic Colorado: dry, cold and moderate in quantity, kept in good condition by the altitude.

Who it suits

Everyone, but on different mountains: Buttermilk for beginners, Snowmass for families and intermediates with the largest terrain, Aspen Mountain for steep groomers straight from town, and Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands for a hike-to expert descent. The town is historic, expensive and cultured. Aspen is on the Ikon Pass and the Mountain Collective.

Getting there

Aspen has its own airport, minutes from town, with flights that are weather-dependent in winter. Denver is about four hours by road; Eagle County airport about an hour and a half.
