Snow in India

India’s skiing is in the western Himalaya. Gulmarg, in Jammu and Kashmir, is the best known: a meadow at 2,650 m with a two-stage gondola to 3,980 m on Mount Apharwat, one of the highest lift-served points in the world, and a reputation for deep, dry snow and serious off-piste terrain. Auli in Uttarakhand and the slopes around Manali in Himachal Pradesh are the other established areas.

In our record Gulmarg averages about 11 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and March and 9 to 10 in February and April. Winter storms here are the western disturbances that cross from the Mediterranean and Iran, and they arrive in bursts.

When it snows

Gulmarg’s season runs from late December to late March. The gondola’s upper stage opens when snow and avalanche conditions allow, which can be well into January.

Getting there

Srinagar airport is about two hours from Gulmarg by road. Winter travel in Kashmir needs planning: check the security situation and road conditions before you go.
