Sweden’s largest ski resort is Åre in Jämtland, in the mountains near the Norwegian border, with lifts from the village at 390 m to 1,274 m. Further north, above the Arctic Circle, Riksgränsen skis into June under the midnight sun, and Sälen, closer to Stockholm, is a family resort with a big spread of gentle terrain.
In our record Åre averages about 14 snowy days at mid-mountain in January and 12 to 13 in March and December. Low altitude is offset by cold and latitude, so the snow that falls stays.
When it snows
Åre’s season runs from late November to late April. Snow arrives with westerly storms crossing from Norway, and the coldest, driest snow falls in January and February when days are short.
Getting there
Åre Östersund airport is about an hour from the resort, and night trains from Stockholm stop in the village. Trondheim in Norway is another option.
