About Snowbird

Snowbird is in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake County, Utah, within the Wasatch National Forest. It is about 29 miles (47 km) from Salt Lake City International Airport.

The Aerial Tram runs to the top of Hidden Peak at 11,000 ft (3,353 m). The lowest lift starts at 7,760 ft (2,365 m).

The snow

Snowbird shares Little Cottonwood Canyon with Alta and gets the same storms, funnelled up the canyon from the Great Salt Lake. Its base is at 2,365 m and the tram reaches Hidden Peak at 3,353 m. Our record, which underestimates snowfall at resorts with strong local effects, shows about 14 snowy days at mid-mountain in March and 12 in January and February, and 2022/23 as the best winter of the ten. Snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years, and the season regularly runs into May.

Who it suits

Experts and strong intermediates: Snowbird is steeper than Alta, with big open faces off the tram and the Mineral Basin bowl behind. The base is a cluster of modern lodges rather than a village. Snowboards are allowed, unlike at Alta, and the two resorts share a pass. Snowbird is on the Ikon Pass and the Mountain Collective.

Getting there

Salt Lake City airport is about 40 minutes by road, subject to the canyon closing for avalanche control after storms.
