About St. Moritz

St. Moritz lies in the Engadin valley at about 1,800 m. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, one of only a few places to host twice.

The skiing

The skiing is split across separate mountains. Corviglia rises above the town and is reached by funicular. Corvatsch, across the valley, has a top station at 3,303 m and a long run down to St. Moritz-Bad.

The snow

St. Moritz sits at 1,822 m in the high, dry Engadin valley, and its ski areas, Corviglia above the town and Corvatsch across the valley, reach 3,303 m. The Engadin is famous for sun and cold: in our record January daytime highs average about −7 °C, it snows on about 11 days a month at mid-mountain in November, December and January, and snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years. Corvatsch’s glacier and north-facing slopes hold the best snow late in the season.

Who it suits

Intermediates who want groomed pistes, sunshine and a resort that is as much about the town as the skiing: St. Moritz has hosted two Winter Olympics and is the birthplace of winter tourism, with the Cresta Run, polo on the frozen lake and five-star hotels. Prices match. Cross-country skiing on the Engadin’s lakes is world-class.

Getting there

Zurich airport is about three hours by train or road, with the train over the Albula line one of the most scenic in Europe. Samedan, next door, has a small airport for private flights.
