About Sölden

Sölden sits at about 1,368 m in the Ötztal, with the satellite village of Hochsölden at 2,090 m. The resort hosts the opening giant slalom races of the Alpine Ski World Cup each autumn on the Rettenbach glacier.

The skiing

The ski area runs from 1,350 m to 3,340 m, with 147 km of pistes and 31 lifts. Two glaciers, the Rettenbachferner and the Tiefenbachferner, are reached by the Ötztal Glacier Road and extend the season into the autumn and spring.

The snow

Sölden has two glaciers, the Rettenbach and the Tiefenbach, with lifts to 3,340 m, and three peaks above 3,000 m linked by lift. That is why the World Cup opens here each October, and why in our record it snows on about 12 to 13 days a month at mid-mountain from November to May, with May among the snowiest months. The village at 1,350 m is a different story: the valley runs depend on snowmaking, and the main skiing is reached by gondola from the village.

Who it suits

Snow-sure early and late season, intermediates who like long, high pistes, and anyone who wants to ski on glaciers without the crowds of Zermatt. The village is large and busy, with a lively après-ski scene. Obergurgl, at the end of the valley, is the quieter, higher alternative.

Getting there

Innsbruck airport is about an hour and a quarter by road. Trains reach Ötztal Bahnhof, with buses up the valley.
