About Ischgl
Ischgl sits at 1,377 m in the Paznaun valley in Tyrol. In March 2020 it became one of the main sites of COVID-19 transmission in Europe and was placed under quarantine.
The skiing
The Silvretta Arena has 239 km of slopes and 46 lifts between 1,377 m and 2,872 m, and links Ischgl with Samnaun in Switzerland, where goods are duty-free. The season usually runs from late November to early May.
The snow
Ischgl’s ski area, the Silvretta Arena, sits high: the village is at 1,377 m but the lifts start their real work above 2,000 m and reach 2,872 m, and most of the skiing is on open slopes above the trees. In our record it snows on about 13 days at mid-mountain in December and March and 12 in January, and snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years. The area is known for reliable, cold snow and for the long season, late November to early May.
Who it suits
Intermediates who like fast, wide, groomed pistes and a lot of them, plus the novelty of skiing into duty-free Samnaun in Switzerland for lunch. The après-ski is loud and the season-opening and closing concerts are famous. The village runs are steep for beginners.
Getting there
Innsbruck airport is about an hour and a half by road, Zurich about two and a half. Trains reach Landeck, 30 km away, with buses up the Paznaun valley.
