About Zermatt
Zermatt is car-free; visitors arrive by train. The Matterhorn dominates the view from much of the ski area.
The skiing
The ski area crosses the border into Italy, and the high glacier terrain allows summer skiing.
The snow
Zermatt’s ski area is one of the highest in the Alps, with lifts to 3,883 m on the Klein Matterhorn and the Theodul glacier skiable all year. That altitude is the whole story: in our record it snows on about 11 to 12 days a month at mid-mountain from November to May, and the resort has had snow on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years. Being in the dry inner Alps, the Valais gets less snow than the northern ranges, and the resort is famous for sun as much as snow, but what falls stays because the mountain is so cold and high. The lower runs to the village at 1,620 m are the exception and depend on snowmaking late in the season.
Who it suits
Anyone who wants to be sure of snow, and anyone who wants the view: the Matterhorn is in sight from most of the ski area. The linked area across the border to Cervinia adds long, sunny, easy runs on the Italian side. Prices are among the highest in the Alps.
Getting there
Zermatt is car-free. Drive or take the train to Täsch and change to the shuttle train, or ride the Glacier Express route from Visp. Geneva and Zurich airports are each about three and a half hours away; Milan is about the same via the Simplon.
