The snow
Verbier sits on a south-west-facing shelf at 1,500 m, and its ski area climbs to 3,330 m on Mont-Fort. The lower slopes above the village catch the afternoon sun and suffer in mild spells; the upper mountain, around Mont-Fort and the Col des Gentianes, is high and cold. Who it suits
Off-piste skiers, above all. Verbier’s itinerary routes and the terrain that hosts the Freeride World Tour final on the Bec des Rosses are its reputation. The pistes are limited for the size of the area, and the village runs are often icy. The 4 Vallées link gives a huge area of varied terrain, and the nightlife is among the best in Switzerland.
Getting there
Geneva airport is about two hours by road. Trains reach Le Châble in the valley below, where a gondola rises to the village.
