About Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein lies at about 1,000 m and grew up around its thermal springs, which gave the town its “Bad” (spa) name and later supported radon therapy at the Gasteiner Heilstollen. It hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1958. The Tauern Railway serves the town with direct trains from Salzburg and Vienna.

The skiing

The Gastein valley has three main ski areas, part of the Ski amadé pass, with about 180 km of slopes between them. The ski area directly above Bad Gastein is Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, shared with Bad Hofgastein; the small Graukogel is served by natural snow. Sportgastein, at the head of the valley, is the highest area, with lifts to about 2,650 m.
