About Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel sits at 762 m, low by Alpine standards, and its ski area runs between roughly 800 m and 2,000 m. The Hahnenkamm rises to 1,712 m and the Kitzbüheler Horn to 1,996 m.

The skiing

The KitzSki area has 233 km of pistes and 58 lifts, including a 3S cable car. The Streif on the Hahnenkamm, first raced in 1937, is the course for the annual Hahnenkamm downhill and is one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit.

The snow

Kitzbühel is low. The town sits at about 760 m and the lifts top out at 2,000 m on the Kitzbüheler Horn, so it depends on cold rather than altitude, and on one of the largest snowmaking systems in the Alps. In our record it snows on about 12 days at mid-mountain in January and 11 in December and March, but January daytime highs sit around freezing, and warm spells hurt here more than at the high Tyrolean resorts. Snow was on the ground on nine of the last ten Christmas Days.

Who it suits

Intermediates and anyone who values the town: Kitzbühel is a walled medieval town with the most famous downhill race in the world, the Hahnenkamm, run on the Streif each January. The pistes are long, rolling and beautifully groomed, and the area links to the Skiwelt for a huge total. Come in January and February rather than at the ends of the season.

Getting there

Trains reach Kitzbühel directly; Innsbruck airport is about an hour and a half, Salzburg about the same, Munich about two hours.
