About Tignes
Tignes is made up of several villages at different heights. The Grande Motte glacier means some skiing is often possible outside the main winter season.
The snow
Tignes is a group of villages between 1,550 m and 2,100 m at the head of the Tarentaise valley, and it shares its ski area with Val d’Isère. The main villages, Tignes-le-Lac and Val Claret, sit above 2,000 m, higher than almost anywhere else in the Alps you can stay, and the Grande Motte glacier reaches 3,456 m. In our record it snows on about 13 days a month at mid-mountain in December, January and March, and the glacier gives a few snowy days even in summer. The upper villages are treeless and exposed, which means the snow keeps but the wind can close the high lifts in a storm.
Who it suits
People who put snow first. The skiing is high, open and extensive, the off-piste is among the best in the Alps, and the resort opens in late November and closes in early May with the glacier open beyond that. The purpose-built villages are less pretty than Val d’Isère’s but cheaper and closer to the lifts.
Getting there
As for Val d’Isère: Geneva and Lyon airports at about three hours, the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, then a bus or taxi.
