About Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère is a regular stop on the alpine skiing World Cup circuit, and its high village makes it one of the more reliable places in the Alps for early and late-season snow.

The snow

Val d’Isère and Tignes share one of the most snow-sure ski areas in France. The village sits at 1,850 m, the lifts reach 3,456 m, and the Grande Motte glacier on the Tignes side extends the season at both ends. In our record it snows on about 13 days a month at mid-mountain in December, January and March, and snow was on the ground every Christmas Day in the last ten years. The area faces every direction, so there is nearly always a slope in the shade holding cold snow and another in the sun.

Who it suits

Strong skiers and snowboarders: the resort’s reputation rests on steep pistes such as the Face, the Olympic downhill course, and on off-piste that is lift-accessible and famous, and correspondingly serious. Beginners have good nursery slopes but the easy runs back to the village are limited. The village is lively, with a large British and Scandinavian presence.

Getting there

Geneva airport is about three hours by road, Lyon about the same, Chambéry closer but with fewer flights. The train reaches Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 30 km away, with buses up to the resort.
